Quick Guide to Writing a CV
A CV is important because first impressions are important. First impressions are formed in less than twenty seconds. Your CV needs to work fast.
Why should the recruitment agent ask to interview you instead of another applicant? Follow these simple guidelines and get your CV noticed.
CV Length
Keep your CV to two A4 pages, maximum. Details of your entire life are not necessary. The recruiter wants to know what you're doing now, and what are your skills.
CV Communication
Always run a spell-check on your CV. If you spell a word wrong or use poor grammar the employer will assume you are careless with no attention to detail.
Would you leave the house in the morning with no shoes on, because you forgot or couldn't be bothered to tie the laces?
CV Formatting
The layout and use of limited space is something to consider carefully. Don't imagine for one minute you need to cram in as much information as possible. Far from it, white space is your friend.
Clarity and brevity are what is required
CV Structure
Remember the recruiter, either the employer or a recruitment agent, is prepared to give you 20 seconds of their time. Use this time well; don't fritter it away with information that is irrelevant.
They want to know what you're doing now and what your qualifications are - so make sure your CV tells them. Begin with your most recent employment.
CV Content
Be concise but ensure enough information is included in the CV. Particularly important, are details about your current job. If the recruiter has too little information, about what you're doing now, how can they make an assessment?
CV Summary
A CV is a sales tool. A CV will list all your professional achievements. A CV tells the recruiter why they should interview you.
