What are a Contractor's Responsibilities when using an Umbrella Company?

Registration Process of an Umbrella Company

Mark Ridgeon, Managing Director of Excellium Umbrella, points out how easy it is to register with an umbrella company:

  • "You must complete the umbrella company's registration documents and send in both your P45 & a form of ID such as passport or driving license. Your umbrella company will explain all of this to the contractor during the registration call."
  • ID is essential even when registering online via Contractor Supermarket, because it is a legal requirement. Register online and the umbrella company will contact you for your ID.

Ongoing Duties when Using an Umbrella Company

You must send your umbrella company your timesheet each time it is authorised by your client's line manager. This is usually on a set frquency, the most common being either weekly or monthly.

Ridgeon goes on to explain:

  • "Your umbrella company will take care of all paperwork, tax, NI & associated responsibilities and red-tape. All income tax, & national insurance will be deducted prior to payment and paid over directly to HMRC on your behalf."
